There are a number of tools/techniques producers can use to indicate healthy soils and healthy grasslands, but they are vastly underused.

One very useful test of the health of your soil—whether on cropland or grassland—is the infiltration test. See if you can answer this question correctly and then click on the photo for the answer.

Which is true about the infiltration test?

It’s meant to detect invasive species that are infiltrating grasslands

It can be complicated and time-consuming

It’s meant to see for yourself how quickly rainfall will infiltrate into your soil rather than run off your land

It’s a good test but not meant to compare one field to another
